A sibling of a student at the Head Start Center at Brookhaven College was diagnosed with type A influenza. The center was notified April 29. As a result, the Center is closed through May 5. Dr. Richard McCrary, interim president of Brookhaven College, said, "The sibling has contracted type A [influenza] and that takes about seven days for the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] to confirm if it is swine flu.
Many students who have benefited from the Achieving the Dream program have probably never heard of it. In 2004, the Lumina Foundation for Education awarded Brookhaven College a five-year grant to develop projects or programs to help more students succeed, particularly for cohorts of students who traditionally face significant barriers - low-income students and minorities, Daniel Hubbard, director of institutional research, said.
Don Cockrell, athletic and equipment coordinator for more than 25 years at Brookhaven College, who was loved and depended on by thousands of student athletes, died April 24 in his sleep at the age of 52. Lynne Levesque, athletic director, said, "There is a long, extended list of thousands of student athletes over the years that have come through our program who were certainly touched by him.
Brookhaven College honored more than 225 graduates who are registered for the May 14 commencement with a party on campus April 22. Thoa Vo, director of admissions and registrar, said since she started her job in 1999, Brookhaven surpassed the largest number of registered graduates for commencement this spring.

A promise is a promise. It's a small statement with such a big impact. Many people don't appreciate the meaning of the word promise. So many promises are broken, forgotten or even ignored. Although, to Daniel Mendoza, a promise is a promise. Mendoza is a 49-year-old grandfather and student at Brookhaven College.
A former Brookhaven College student will be presenting a research paper she wrote at the American Political Science Association conference. Shelby Bishop is a political science senior at Southern Methodist University. She attended Brookhaven for two and a half years before receiving a full-ride scholarship to SMU.
The Student Scholarship Reception recognized students of different backgrounds for their academic achievements April 25. More than 45 students received scholarships for the fall 2009 semester. All of the students were nominated by faculty, staff and committee members of Brookhaven College.
The Multicultural Center and the Advising and Counseling Center at Brookhaven College are implementing a new paging system in August. Oscar Lopez, vice president of enrollment management and student success, introduced similar pagers at Richland College. "We wanted the students to have the ability to do some constructive business while they are waiting," he said.

Five students from Brookhaven College participated in the Community College Aerospace Scholars program April 23-25 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. Teams were made up of students from more than 20 Texas community colleges.
