Lady Bears break Division III record

Despite adversity, the record-breaking Brookhaven College volleyball team became the first to win four National Junior College Athletic Association Division III titles Nov. 13-14 in Minnesota. Brookhaven, the No. 1 seed, swept both the No. 8 and No. 5 seeded teams on the first day of competition at the national championship tournament.

BHC professor affected by Haiti quake shares rescue story, advice

"I remember the people. We brought vision to literally thousands of Haitians over the last 30 years," adjunct professor David Griggs said. Griggs volunteered in Haitian relief for more than 10 years before the earthquake struck Jan. 12. Griggs teaches government and criminal justice at Brookhaven College and began volunteering in Haiti as chair of the mission committee at Highland Park United Methodist Church in 1999.

Remedial course enrollment on par with nation

Twenty percent of Brookhaven College students require either a developmental math, writing or reading course, Matthewos Kassa, director of institutional effectiveness and improvement, said. Of the 20 percent who need a developmental course, Kassa said 90 percent of the students' requirements are for developmental math.

Deadline looms for PSSA scholarships

The Brookhaven Pro-fessional Support Staff Association is offering Brookhaven College students the opportunity to obtain a $300 scholarship for the fall, Angela Shoultz, career planning and placement specialist, said. Bob Smith, president of the PSSA, said every year the committee and staff host a fundraiser to collect money for the scholarships.

Comparing online vs. on-campus

Online courses are far from the traditional experience most students are accustomed to in an on-campus environment, yet the ability to tailor online courses around a busy schedule is a great asset for students. But the question is, will the quality of education compare, especially in higher-level courses in math and science? Russell Simmons, professor of mathematics at Brookhaven College, believes it depends on the student.
