Professor applies unorthodox style

Hurshel Burton, world literature and English professor, rehearsed back-to-back with two bands after a day of teaching classes. The next morning, Feb. 26, he successfully defended his doctorate dissertation for his Ph.D. with a committee at Brookhaven College before celebrating and performing live at Lakewood Bar & Grill with his rock band Threesome.

Phone trips up Mailroom

The Brookhaven College Mailroom and Copy Center, located in the basement of T Building, have had trouble keeping their shared phone line working for months and haven't found a permanent solution. The Mailroom and Copy Center are two rooms mostly divided by a wall, but they share a small common area with one phone placed at the end of the wall partition.

Professor shares real-world skills

Professor Shane Baxter said he is living his fantasy. A graduate of Brookhaven College and currently a professor in the Automotive Technology program, Baxter brings his knowledge and passion to Brookhaven. While attending Brookhaven from 1986 - 1988 and studying automotive technology, Baxter learned and gathered the information he now shares with his students.

W Building opens

From President Barack Obama and the current affairs of race relations to predictions of a racism-free future, the panel explored the question, "Do we live in a post-racial society?" Careers fight crime

Students interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice can begin at Brookhaven College. Since the fall semester of 2009, Brookhaven has offered five courses toward an Associate in Arts with a Field of Study in Criminal Justice. The program is designed for students who want to earn a bachelor's degree in criminal justice at a four-year college.

Skills Shops suggest strategies for tests, class, relationships

Brookhaven College counselors are hosting a weekly Skills Shop to help students improve their study skills so they can be successful in school, Beverly Neu Menassa, licensed professional counselor, said. She said in the Skills Shops students can learn test and study strategies.

Green Team urges car pooling, gas conservation

The Brookhaven College Green Team has discovered a car pooling Web site that can help students and staff save money while helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions, which can be harmful to the environment. AlterNetRides.com is a public car pooling Web site that connects commuters through an Internet-based computer program.

Group walks for fitness, fun

Amy Kersey, English and developmental writing professor, walks around the jogging trail, along with Brookhaven College students, every Monday and Wednesday from 3-4 p.m. Kersey said she wants to build a community with students and faculty. "I came up with this idea at the end of last semester," Kersey said.

Students to live, learn Spanish in Argentina

About 15-20 students will participate in a four-week travel abroad program to Argentina June 5 - July 3. Rebecca Garcia, Span-ish professor, said the Brookhaven College Credit Spanish Language Program will provide an opportunity to learn and experience Spanish language in Buenos Aires.
