More than 45 students received scholarships for the fall 2009 semester. All of the students were nominated by faculty, staff and committee members of Brookhaven College.
Radio, television and film major Frederick Quaye was one of many to receive a scholarship award at the reception. He is currently enrolled at Brookhaven and the University of North Texas.
"It is a privilege to receive this award," he said. "I feel that it will open many opportunities for me and I want to use it for the good of all."
Quaye received the Blatta Scholarship. According to the Student Scholarship Reception program, the Blatta Scholarship is a reward given to someone who sets a good example for other students by being honest and ethical. The recipient also must have a child in the Head Start program. Quaye said he takes an optimistic approach to life, and his goals and aspirations in life are to be passionate at his job.
Another student awarded was Mae Strange, sonography freshman. She said her goal is to become a pediatrician. She said her 5-month-old son is her motivation and having him makes her a stronger person.
"It's a feeling that no one could give me," she said.
Strange received the Ann Faulkner Scholarship. This scholarship was established in honor of Ann Faulkner, a retired developmental reading faculty member.
Not only were the students honored at the reception, but so were the donors of the scholarships. Marilyn Lynch, associate vice president of career and program resources, spoke at the reception. Lynch told the audience it was important to recognize the contributors of the scholarships and express how the donations are greatly appreciated.
Dr. Mary Brumbach, executive district director of strategic funding, contributes funds toward a scholarship in memory of her parents, Orin Lee and Virginia. Brumbach said her parents would have approved of the four recipients of their endowed memorial scholarship.
She said her mother was an English professor in the Dallas County Community College District, and her father was an electrical engineer. Brumbach said she was delighted with the recipients, and added the students were deserving of the scholarships.
The reception awarded students in all divisions of study at Brookhaven. Lynch ended the awards ceremony with a quote from actress Helen Hayes: "My mother drew a distinction between achievement and success. She said achievement is the knowledge that you have studied and worked hard and done the best that is in you. Success is being praised by others, and that's nice, too, but not as important or satisfying. Always aim for achievement and forget about success."
