A former Brookhaven College student will be presenting a research paper she wrote at the American Political Science Association conference.
Shelby Bishop is a political science senior at Southern Methodist University. She attended Brookhaven for two and a half years before receiving a full-ride scholarship to SMU. Bishop said she is very passionate about being a political science major.
"I love my major. I'm a current events junkie, and politics fascinates me," she said. "My major allows me to combine my passion with my education."
Bishop wrote her paper on the relationship between piracy and civil conflict. She and one of her political science professors at SMU, Chelsea Brown, who is co-authoring the paper, explained when state and civil instability increase, piracy will increase as well. Bishop said while her paper explores the piracy issue worldwide, she focuses on the increase of piracy activity in the Gulf of Aden, which is off the coast of Somalia.
Although Bishop's SMU professor encouraged her to submit her paper to the conference, she gave credit for her success to her Brookhaven professors as well.
"The professors at Brookhaven are phenomenal. … They truly prepared me for SMU and university study," Bishop said.
Robert Little, Brookhaven government professor, said Bishop was a wonderful student and she is a role model to all.
Other Brookhaven professors: philosophy professor Jerrod Scott, and psychology professor Steve Link, said Bishop was an outstanding student. Link said not only was she here for credit toward a degree, but simply to learn; she had a passion for knowledge.
The conference where Bishop will present her paper is an annual meeting for the APSA. According to the Web site, the conference is Sept. 3-6 in Toronto. The APSA also states they are the world's largest professional organization for the study of politics, with more than 15,000 members from 80 different countries.
