For the past two years an English for Speakers of Other Languages program has provided classes for the mothers and fathers of students at Thomas Jefferson High School in Dallas.
Many come for improvement and some come for their job process, Leroy Butler, workforce and continuing education specialist, said. In the end, Vernon Hawkins, associate vice president of workforce and continuing education, said they have one common goal: to prepare themselves for the future, regardless of age.
ESOL is a part of the Brookhaven College Southern Sector Initiative, which Butler said will help the adults south of Brookhaven and east of Interstate Highway 35E get their General Equivalency Diploma or even perfect their English.
Participants will have access to many courses, which take place Monday through Thursday evenings during the school year, Hawkins said. These courses include ESOL levels zero through three, Microsoft Word and computer literacy. Those who successfully complete these courses will receive an institutional certificate from Brookhaven, Hawkins said.
Butler said, "This program has potential to grow; the marketing is reaching out to people like never before."
ESOL is trying to reach the elementary school children and their parents so the program can strengthen the community, he said.
Hawkins said ESOL is specifically for the parents of the students attending Thomas Jefferson High School, but anyone may register and attend these courses. Students who want information regarding schedules or wish to register can contact ESOL by calling 972-860-4600.
