The Web Design and Development Level II Certificate and the Visual Communications Associate of Applied Science Degree have both been approved to meet standards set by the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies, which paneled more than 40 organizations and validated the skills through 748 companies.
Lauri Collins, visual communications program director, worked from Oct. 2008 to July 2009 integrating the state-required skills into the curriculum.
Now when students graduate from either degree program they will receive an embossed seal on their diploma signifying TSSB approval.
Ngoc Truong, instructional designer of program development, assisted Collins in bringing the programs to the required standards.
They spent nearly a year reviewing every course and completing all requirements for recognition.
Truong said, "When students graduate, the seal signifies that the curriculum has the skills that have been validated by business and industry."
Graduates will be documented as having acquired the skills and knowledge deemed necessary in their field. Only 12 Texas schools were granted recognition.
Sandy Wyche, executive dean of the business studies division said: "It made our degree program that much more respected. It's going to make our students more marketable."
