The Brookhaven Pro-fessional Support Staff Association is offering Brookhaven College students the opportunity to obtain a $300 scholarship for the fall, Angela Shoultz, career planning and placement specialist, said.

Bob Smith, president of the PSSA, said every year the committee and staff host a fundraiser to collect money for the scholarships. He said they sell flowers, among other things, to raise the money. Smith said the PSSA offers scholarships annually, and this year the PSSA staff collected the most money to date.

The committee set a goal to raise more than $600, the amount they raised last year. Shoultz said last year they offered two scholarships, but this year they raised a total of $1,500, which they have divided into five scholarships. Dr. Richard McCrary, interim president, contributed personally, which in addition to other donations helped them surpass their goal, Shoultz said. Next year, the committee hopes to raise more than $1,500.

Bianca Teniente, Brook-haven Student Government Association vice president, received a PSSA scholarship last spring. She said she was surprised when she heard she was chosen and plans on applying this year as well.

"This is an equal opportunity for everyone," Shoultz said.

Students can apply for as many different scholarships as they like. Students who are interested can get an application from the Career Development Office or from the Financial Aid Office.

The deadline to apply is 9 a.m. Feb. 28. Shoultz said the PSSA will announce scholarship recipients during the April student award ceremony.

To receive one of the five scholarships, Brookhaven students must fill out the application, attach a two-page essay on one of the given topics and turn in their transcripts and a letter of recommendation from a professor. Smith said the committee will then decide which five students receive the PSSA scholarships.

Shoultz said there are few requirements to qualify for this scholarship. Students need to have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and be enrolled for at least six credit hours.

Teniente said when she was a senior in high school she applied to many different scholarships to no avail. She said she worried about paying for school without assistance.

"For those who are being rejected from scholarships, keep trying," she said.
